NWF Weekly Grass Watch

Grass Growth

This week, grass growth decreased by 5kg DM/ha/day on the previous week, to give an average of 42kg DM/ha/day. Despite being the third consecutive week of growth rate decreases, the grass growth remains ahead of the same period for last year, where growth rate averaged 34kg DM/ha/day. The largest decline in grass growth of -15kg DM/ha/day was recorded in the East, whilst Yorkshire was the only region to see an increase in growth rate, at +5kg DM/ha/day.

Milk Yield from Grazing (MYFG)

Average MYFG across GB has increased this week to M+2.66 litres/day, compared to M-0.66 litres/day the previous week. Although grass growth has continued to decline, a combination of increased potential dry matter intake from grazing and a slight increase in ME has driven milk yield from fresh grass.
Unfortunately, the lab at Trouw only received samples from the North West, North East & Yorkshire and Wales & the West this week. MYFG values ranged from M+2.0 litres/day to M+2.8 litres/day.

Sample conserved forages for winter

As we come towards the end of the 2020 grazing season and as the contribution of fresh grass towards milk production is minimal, producers are advised to ensure conserved forages are analysed for both their nutritional and mineral contents for optimal winter diets.
