When it comes to sheep fertility the choice of feed is very important. As pregnancy progresses abdominal space becomes more limited and the rumen is compressed.
The aim should be to provide a nutrient dense, high dry matter ration based on high quality forage and concentrates such as NWF Ewe nuts and rolls. NWF concentrates are of high quality and fully mineralised, they contain a high proportion of by-pass protein in the form of Ultra Pro R (Protected Rapeseed) and Hipro Soya which are needed to support lamb growth during pregnancy, produce high quality colostrum and support good yields of quality milk during lactation.
The ewe is likely to benefit from pre-mating flushing starting from 4 weeks before tupping, a balanced sheep mineral should be included as part of the diet. Vitamin E and Selenium are very important for the pregnant ewe and developing lamb. Vitamin E levels decline over winter and combined with low quantities in forages and straights can lead to deficiencies. A good vitamin E status is vital as vitamin E cannot cross the placenta so lambs only supply is via colostrum. Ewes require 75-100mg of vitamin E per day. Selenium readily passes through the placenta to build lamb reserves at birth. Inadequate selenium levels cause increased lamb mortality, poor milk and colostrum quality as well as poor growth and immune status. NWF sheep minerals are available in compound and blends and are specifically formulated to provide optimal vitamin and mineral levels in order to meet the demands of pregnant ewes to maximise lamb growth and survival and promote ewe health.
Ewes are fussy eaters and require high quality grass silage. Refused feed should be removed every day. Remember that ewes cannot use mobilised body reserves to support foetal growth. For more information please call 0800 756 2787
