Profit for Life is NWF’s way of looking at the performance of a dairy herd. It has been produced by NWF for exclusive use with customers and prospects. NWF believe it is a valuable way to help farmers unlock the potential of their herd.

 

Profit for Life takes the view that a cow’s contribution to the herd requires her to cover her rearing costs before entering the herd and to then maximise her contribution until she leaves the herd. In simple terms she needs to:

 

• Calve down as young as possible
• Milk as efficiently as possible
• Get back in calve quickly
• And remain healthy allowing her to complete as many lactations as possible.

 

NWF are able to offer products and services to help with every aspect of managing a cow and Profit for Life will allow you to identify which aspects of performance are holding the herd back and then develop plans to improve performance.

 

Profit for Life has the advantage that unlike other costings and measurement approaches, it looks at the entire time the cow spends on the farm and uses two new measures which NWF hope will become the standard way of talking about cow efficiency:

How long does it take for a heifer to cover her rearing costs and contribute positively to the business? Generally the sooner the animal calves down and starts producing, the sooner she will cover her costs.

 

Total lifetime profit –

 

Once she has covered her costs, how much does she actually make? This is affected by factors such as yield, calving interval and most importantly, culling rate.

 

NWF’s recent survey shows that few farmers understand these factors and how they affect farm profit and this is exactly why NWF have developed the scheme – to help farmers take a new look at their herd and develop more successful, sustainable businesses.
