CALF FEEDING RECOMMENDATIONS

It is essential that all calves receive adequate quantities of colostrum within 3 to 6 hours of birth. Milk feeding of purchased calves should commence after a rest period of approximately 6 hours after arrival.

MIXING RATES

For twice daily feeding systems, mix with water at the rate of at least 125g of powder to make 1 litre of mixed milk replacer; i.e. add 0.5kg powder to 3.5 litres of water to make 4 litres of mixed milk replacer. For machine feeding systems, follow the machine manufacturers’ recommendations or contact your specialist. For higher growth rates mix at 150g/litre. In cold weather increase mixing rates by an additional 25g/litre.

TO MIX

  • 1. Sprinkle a measured amount of powder into a bucket of warm water (42°C).
  • 2. Whisk briskly
  • 3. Add hot and cold water to obtain the amount required at the correct concentration to achieve a feeding temperature of 42°C.
