Ration Planning

Our comprehensive Feed Rationing System is regularly updated to take accounts of all the developments that improve our understanding of how to ration cows effectively. Following discussions with your Feed Specialist the program will formulate a cost-effective, balanced ration with sufficient levels of all essential nutrients to suit your yield, milk quality and animal welfare requirements.

 

RPM

 

Dairy cow feeding has changed beyond all recognition over the last 50 years, entirely fuelled by the development of new technologies and a phenomenal increase in our understanding of what actually drives production – the rumen. When feeding a cow we are feeding the rumen, therefore it is important to provide specific substrates for rumen fermentation.

 

The NWF Rumen performance monitoring (RPM) system does this by classifying carbohydrates and proteins as rapidly or slowly fermented. Rapidly fermented feeds are fermented in less than two hours. RPM effectively looks at energy supply on an ‘hourly basis’, giving far greater precision. By more accurately balancing the rates of fermentation diets can be prevented which have, for example, rapidly fermented energy and slowly fermented protein. Synchronising the diet in this way will lead to improved rumen function and health, increased feed efficiency and confidence that the cow receives the correct supply of digestion end products for maintenance and production.

 

Once the rumen is balanced we can then look to balancing the bypass nutrients required to complete the picture using our NWF Protected Feeds.

 

Diet Sieving

 

Sieving is a technique that helps you get the best from your rations.

 

The way cows perform on a diet depends not only on the nutritional specification of the diet but also on the physical form of the ration. We have been working closely with Frank Wright Trouw Nutrition International in a research project to modify the sieving system used in the United States (the Penn State Separator System) and make it suitable for UK forages and systems.

 

The result is a mechanism to assess the physical breakdown of diets and to compare what is being fed to targets and to modify diets accordingly. The system predicts what the breakdown of the particle sizes will be when the diet is formulated. It also assesses the quality of the fibre in the diet and how effective it is in promoting chewing and rumination, both of which are essential for high yields and milk quality. The system enables you to check the ration fed is what is expected following mixing and post feeding.

 

Targeted Feeding

 

With margins tight, farmers have got to improve efficiency, and one way they can do this is by target feeding specific cows. Total Mixed Ration (TMR) feeding ensures that cows get the same amount of feed; however this can cause problems in the case of “one size does not fit all”. Some cows may be too fat when drying off, and this can cause many difficulties, such as displaced abomasums when calving, which not only effects milk yield but their ability to get back in calf, a very vicious circle. With targeted feeding each cow is fed a specific diet, which can be tailored by NWF to ensure that you meet all output requirements.
