Latest statistics suggest that only around 50% of beef carcases hit the target specification. Selling animals too heavy, too fat or too lean will lead to lower prices and potentially to higher feed costs.
Managing the feed input to achieve target specifications is the key to maximising returns from beef.
Know your market understand what your market wants and make sure you produce to that specification. Analyse feedback from the market or processor to understand how well you are doing.
Set targets and measure performance what target daily liveweight gain do you need to achieve and how do you know you are achieving it? Regular weighing of animals is the only way to accurately assess rates of gain, allowing feed to be adjusted accordingly.
Focus on forage quality making silage with an energy content 1MJ/kg DM higher could allow a saving of 120kg concentrates per head over a 200 day feeding period.
Be precise about feed analysing silage is as important for beef farmers as it is for dairy farmers. If you don’t know how good your silage is, how can you supplement it cost-effectively? Under estimating forage can lead to higher than necessary purchased feed use and higher costs.
NWF offer a wide range of compounds, blends and supplements to suit all beef herd requirements.
